As of Feb. 24th, the IRS reports it's received almost 46 million federal returns and issued more than 35 million refunds. Is yours among them?
What if you haven’t been able to file your return because you are missing some tax documents? Most people should have received their income documents near the end of January. But what do you do if you are still waiting?
Contact the employer, payer, or issuing agency directly and ask for copies.
If getting in contact with your employer doesn’t work, contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 for help. The IRS will contact the employer or payer and request the missing form.
If you don’t receive the missing form in time to file by the due date, you can complete Form 4852 to estimate your earnings.
Those who need more time to file can request an extension. Remember an extension to file is not an extension of time to pay. You should estimate and pay any owed taxes by your regular deadline to help avoid possible penalties.
Keep in mind, if you receive the missing or corrected Form W-2 or Form 1099-R after filing your return and the information is different than your previous estimate, you will need to file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
